New countertops, a new sink and faucet, a tile backsplash, updated lighting, and either new doors and drawer fronts or a full cabinet replacement in the existing footprint. Nothing structural moves, so the kitchen is typically back in service quickly and the cost stays predictable. This is the right call when the layout already works and the room just looks tired.
The footprint stays, but things move inside it. Relocating the range, adding an island, widening a pantry, replacing a cramped peninsula with something that seats people. This pulls in electrical and sometimes plumbing, which means inspections and a longer schedule — but it's where a badly laid-out kitchen actually gets fixed.
A lot of Hill Country homes built in the 1970s and '80s put the kitchen in a closed-off room with a single doorway. Taking down the wall between the kitchen and living area is one of the most-requested changes we get. If that wall is load-bearing it needs a properly sized header and posts carrying down to solid bearing — that's an engineering question before it's a design question, and we'll tell you straight whether the wall can go.
On hard water: most of this area draws from limestone aquifers, and the mineral content is rough on kitchen fixtures. If you've been replacing faucets every few years or fighting cloudy film on glassware, mention it during the estimate. Choosing fixture finishes and a filtration approach at remodel time is far cheaper than retrofitting later.

A kitchen remodel takes your kitchen out of service, and there's no way around that. What we can do is tell you honestly how long each phase will take and warn you before the loud, dusty stretches. Demolition and cabinet install are the disruptive parts; tile, trim, and finish work are quieter.
If you're staying in the house, set up a temporary kitchen somewhere else before demo starts — a microwave, the coffee maker, and the refrigerator relocated to a garage or dining room makes a genuine difference over a multi-week project. We'll flag the right week to do that.
Often, yes. If the boxes are solid and the layout works, refacing or repainting with new doors, drawer fronts, and hardware gets you most of the visual change at a fraction of replacement cost. If the boxes are particleboard that's swollen at the sink base, or the layout is the actual problem, replacement is the better spend. We'll tell you which situation you're in.
It depends on the scope and on whether you're inside Kerrville city limits or out in the county. Cosmetic work usually doesn't require one; moving plumbing or electrical, or altering a wall, usually does. We handle the permitting conversation as part of the project rather than leaving it on you, and we'll confirm the current requirements with the relevant authority for your specific address.
Both hold up well. Granite is a natural stone with more variation slab to slab — worth seeing in person rather than picking from a sample chip. Quartz is engineered, so it's more uniform and doesn't need periodic sealing. For a household that cooks hard and doesn't want maintenance, quartz is the easier answer.
